About Kathleen

Born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan in the early 60’s, I was surrounded by the music of local legends The MC5, The Stooges and the irrepressible Motown sound coming out of Detroit. By the mid-seventies, my teenage years were fueled by the punk rock movement which inspired my move to New York City to attend Parsons School of Design. It was a defining moment when on a whim, I slipped through the backdoor of The Palladium with my camera and captured early photos of The Police during their pre- show soundcheck. This launched the beginning of a 2 year adventure, photographing legendary bands including The Clash, PiL Ltd., and The Jam, while staying true to the culture of punk rock as a passionate fan.

My photographs quickly opened doors to freelance opportunities, shooting for magazines and record labels, and led to a pivotal role in the early ground-floor days of MTV Networks as a staff Art Director. There, I helped shape the "Dayglo" culture of the 80s, and contributed visually to the revolutionary change in music and entertainment media. My experience at MTV laid the groundwork for my subsequent 25-year career in the film and television industry in Los Angeles, where photography, design and digital media converged.

Now in 2024, I’m working to complete my upcoming book, "Punk+Rock in the Eighties” slated for release in 2025. The book showcases my photographs from 1980-1983, and the stories behind them as a photographer, fan, and now decades later, a chronicler of this once-in-a-lifetime moment in music history.
